10 Experts Predict The Future of ChatGPT Plugins: The Next App Store?

ChatGPT Plugins have already transformed the way we interact with AI. Not only do they allow businesses to connect themselves with ChatGPT, but they also make things much easier for their customers. However, it’s important to remember that plugins are currently in their infancy. In this blog post, we will speculate on the future of ChatGPT Plugins, taking into account the opinions of AI experts and plugin developers.

Future Advancements In AI

As innovative and useful as ChatGPT is in its current form, its functionality and ability to learn from conversations with users is only going to improve. According to plugin developer Illya Liudogovskyi, we will continue to see more sophisticated and intuitive chatbots that can handle a wide range of tasks and conversations.

“I foresee a greater emphasis on personalization and customization, with chatbots being able to tailor their responses to each individual user based on their preferences and history with the application,” Liudogovskyi said.

Other successful plugin developers also chimed in on possible future advancements in ChatGPT. Here’s what some of them said:

“Perhaps there will be usage metrics because currently, those aren’t available and have to be programmed from the plugin side to some extent.” – Jason Moore, Developer of My Writing Companion Plugin

“OpenAI or other LLM providers will allow more UI control for developers, which will lead to better responses with images and charts. This will lead to better plugins and ultimately people shifting away from always visiting company websites and instead using plugins.” – Mason Swofford, Developer of California Law, US Federal Law, and Code Library Search Plugins

“I envision a bright future for ChatGPT plugins as they continue to gain new functionalities. With the potential expansion to Android platforms and the introduction of image-processing capabilities, the range of applications for these plugins could increase exponentially. This would open up a myriad of possibilities for developers and users alike, further enhancing the utility and versatility of ChatGPT.” – Leonardo Piffer Dameto, Developer of TalkLawBrazil Plugin

“While it’s challenging to accurately forecast the trajectory of the ChatGPT plugin market, the integration of such plugins certainly signals a promising and dynamic future for users and aligns seamlessly with the operation of LLMs. The concept of a ‘centralized generalist main LLM’ could be the foundation for a future where AI plugins operate akin to mobile apps, featuring centralized payment and intricate cross-plugin integrations. It’s a future filled with potential, akin to a new technological frontier.” – Thales Davila, Senior Developer at ADP

Plugin Store Improvements

Other developers emphasized the potential advancements in the functionality of the Plugin Store. As an evolving feature, the plugin store has immense potential.

Chief Operating Officer of Sembot Michal Zielinski says “[The] ChatGPT plugin marketplace will change over time. There will be a more thorough validation and approval process. Possibly will also include better plugin listing and search engines. Additionally, Plugins will work best alongside each other in order to create a more advanced ecosystem, thus the partnerships between plugins will be highly significant.”

“Plugins will experience significant improvements in the Plugin Store due to the current deficiencies in user experience, such as the inability to showcase detailed plugin descriptions and links to their homepages prior to installation. Additionally, OpenAI might offer a mechanism for plugin users to directly contact developers for support and provide feedback.” – Viktor Ferenczi, Developer, and Consultant at Vix Technology Ltd.

“Once plugins become universally available, a vast user base will be drawn to them. I envision a future where ChatGPT serves as a versatile interface for controlling various aspects of daily life. The ChatGPT marketplace has the potential to compete with established app marketplaces like the App Store or Google Play Store. However, there are still aspects to be addressed, such as developing effective monetization strategies for plugins.” – Aaron Leonard Glaser, Developer of World Bank Data and Google Trends Plugin

Monetization of the Plugin Store

Many interviewees voiced the importance of future monetization of plugins, given that in the current beta phase of the feature, it is extremely difficult for developers to see any sort of financial gain from their work.

“At present, the ChatGPT plugin platform still has many areas that need improvement. The future I most envision is the further expansion of plugin users, while allowing plugin developers to achieve reasonable commercial revenue.” – Zhong Xin, Developer of Pluginpedia and Crypto Market News Plugins

Some voiced skepticism regarding the future of plugins. Najmuzzaman Mohammad, developer of Lexi Shopper Plugin, said “ChatGPT users are very dependent on ChatGPT to make the right workflow recommendations and I think making users make the choice of choosing 3 plugins before starting a workflow is very tough, especially when the plugins are black boxes in themselves and you can’t really understand what they do until you use them. The only way plugins would really work well for ChatGPT if ChatGPT can make the right plugin recommendations and ask consent from the user to install and call it during the user’s workflow.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Will ChatGPT plugins become the next app store?

Possibly, but experts describe it less as a copy of the iOS App Store and more as a marketplace inside a general AI assistant. Thales Davila said AI plugins could “operate akin to mobile apps, featuring centralized payment and intricate cross-plugin integrations.” That points to a plugin ecosystem with store-like discovery and payments, but organized around one main LLM interface.

Could ChatGPT plugins expand beyond text chat into Android, images, and richer interfaces?

Yes. Leonardo Piffer Dameto predicts expansion to Android platforms and image-processing capabilities, and Mason Swofford expects more UI control for images and charts. Bill French adds a performance signal: “They’ve officially cracked the sub-second barrier, a breakthrough that fundamentally changes the user experience from merely ‘interactive’ to ‘instantaneous’.” Together, those changes suggest future plugins will feel faster and more multimodal than today’s mostly text-based experiences.

How will future ChatGPT plugins move beyond simple Q&A?

Developers expect plugins to handle broader tasks, personalize responses, and support real workflows instead of only answering one-off questions. Illya Liudogovskyi predicts more sophisticated chatbots that can tailor replies to a user’s preferences and history. Barry Barresi describes one example of that shift: “Powered by my custom-built Theory of Change AIM GPT agent on the CustomGPT.ai platform. Rapidly Develop a Credible Theory of Change with AI-Augmented Collaboration.” That points to plugins that help users plan, analyze, and collaborate, not just retrieve facts.

What kinds of ChatGPT plugins are most likely to succeed?

Plugins with a narrow purpose and a clear outcome are more likely to stand out than generic chat layers. Expert predictions emphasize personalization and customization, and real adoption tends to follow usefulness. Per Bergfors of Copenhagen Business Academy said, “Adopting CustomGPT.ai made material more accessible and appealing, leading to a significant increase in student participation and enthusiasm for the subject matter.” That suggests education, training, and other domain-specific plugins with obvious user value have strong odds of succeeding.

Will ChatGPT plugins replace websites and support portals?

Probably not entirely, but experts do expect some user behavior to shift away from traditional websites. Mason Swofford predicts better plugin interfaces with images and charts, leading to people shifting away from always visiting company websites and instead using plugins. In practice, that suggests a mixed future where websites still matter, while more discovery, support, and task completion happen inside AI assistants.

Will bigger AI models automatically make ChatGPT plugins accurate enough for serious use?

No. Bigger base models help, but serious accuracy still depends on grounding answers in trusted material. A published RAG accuracy benchmark found CustomGPT.ai outperformed OpenAI, which suggests retrieval quality matters as much as model size. Elizabeth Planet explains the same point from a user perspective: “I added a couple of trusted sources to the chatbot and the answers improved tremendously! You can rely on the responses it gives you because it’s only pulling from curated information.” If you’re evaluating a plugin for serious use, look for curated sources and citation support, not just a larger model.

Conclusion

No matter what the future holds for ChatGPT Plugins, it is clear that the feature has already made a significant impact on ChatGPT even in its beta phase. Hundreds of plugins with a wide range of capabilities have already been developed, and there will only continue to be more and more introduced.
